Happy 4th of July from Surgeon Marta
Fireworks display by Chane
Stars & Stripes

Mercury has finally gone direct and yes dear friends so have we... Direct to your inbox. At last the astrological debris have settled and we want to wish you all a Wonderful July 4th!

Also, for those planning to be on the westside of Los Angeles on the evening of the 4th, tilt yer view towards the Hillcrest Country Club where Chane will be helping set off a seriously insane fireworks display.

I know, I know, Irishmen and explosives may seem a little counter intuitive, dangerous even - but this is America dammit and if an independent DIY punk rock musician wants to help us celebrate our independence, I say, “Why the hell not!?!”

Now assuming the westside doesn’t fall off into the ocean, we’re looking forward to see you all again for our upcoming LIVE gig on Sat. July 26th @ The Five Star Bar in Downtown LA.

Hugs & Suds!

Alcoholism and the Afterlife (a true story)

When confronted with experiences that are weird or supernatural most of us chose to pass them off as amusing tales to be shared in social gatherings but rarely worthy of serious examination. Such was the case with our resident “guitar abuser” Chane when recounting an incident from his drinking days in NYC.

“I stopped into one of my regular watering holes and the barman told me I’d been completely messed up the night before. Now I knew I had a few but didn’t think I was that bad. However his version of events had me buying drinks for and talking to someone on the empty barstool beside me!

‘Well why did you keep serving me I asked’?? ‘You kept tipping me’ he said ‘so I didn’t want to break up the conversation’!! Yeah he was an Irish bartender."

Needless to say the story generated a few laughs but was soon forgotten about until last year when Vivian and Chane watched a show on one of the sci-fi channels detailing haunted locations in NYC.  Suddenly there it was, the bar, the spooky stories associated with it and the jogged memory of arguing with a Welshman about poetry...  or now as it turns out, the ghost of Dylan Thomas!!

Naturally pen was put to paper while vintage amps, pianos and guitars were gathered in a room. The result, an atmospheric punk noir jam (or as the mastering engineer commented, a “gothic bossa nova” called - Speaking with the Dead A.K.A “You Tell Me”

This track is available here as a FREE download from now till Nov 1st, it's official release date on iTunes.

Surgeon Marta will also be making two live appearances. The first on college radio KXLU, performing ghost stories and assorted tales of terror with special guest voice talent @ midnight on Wed 30th Oct (the eve of the eve itself). The second on Fri Nov 1st, DIA DE LOS MUERTOS, in a full decibel hallucinogenic Peckinpah-esque freak out @ Trip, Santa Monica.

The 3 B's

El Medico

When it comes to making music videos Surgeon Marta are guided by the simple “can do” philosophy of the 3B’s: BLOOD, BOOBS & BEDLAM.

Sure we encountered character-building obstacles along the way but we’ve found that the simultaneous ignition of gasoline and lighter fluid can bring joy and delight to pretty much any situation. However it must be said that if the going gets really tough it probably means you’re using a Nikon instead of a Canon.

So without further ado, here's a BIG THANKS to all the lunatics who helped make this happen!

Enjoy...

Night of the Wolf Moon

Trip Santa Monica

Wolf Moon

You know, there might be something to all this End-Of-The-World business because, that's right...

WE'RE BACK!

Now assuming we all survive the night, let us tell you what we have in store for

Saturday, January 26th, 2013:

It's the first FULL MOON of the new year and as legend has it was dubbed the Wolf Moon by ancient Native American tribes.  So no surprises when we picked this day to premiere our werewolf inspired music video -
Do You Say Your Prayers At Night? our first official music video since Send More Cops!

Joining us on this special night is The Slow Poisoner a one-man surrealistic rock and roll band from San Francisco. He's also a spiritual advice columnist at Pork Magazine who's prognostications of the herenow & hereafter - thrill with uncanny accuracy.

But wait - there’s more!

Keeping the party going will be Culver City’s The Bad Bad Things, a drunk rock garage fiesta fronted by powerhouse vocalist Kryss Deetch.  Prepare to walk the plank to margaritaville!

Finally, wrapping up the night is Moonshine Earl wanted for crimes against musicality in at least seven states and banned from every live venue within Boston's city limits. This liquored lothario will be making his west coast debut at Trip!

See you there!

...than having your name in lights - it's having your ART in lights!

When a "wouldn't it be cool" conversation turns into a 3 x 4 foot neon sign what can you say but, "Hell Yeah!?"

The collaboration between ChaneO' and John, (the owner of TRiP) can be seen every night at 2101 Linclon Blvd. 90405 the coolest live-music venue on the westside.

Dia De La Hellbourne

In general it's fairly safe to say that Surgeon Marta has a couple of usual predilections but our favorites always seem to lie in the foggy crossroads of scientific study and the esoteric unknown. That's why Day of the Dead is just our kind of holiday! Seriously, what other holiday let's you decorate with skulls and skeletons, feast with your dearly departed and falls on the day after Halloween? (WINNING!) Anyway, this year Christine's Día de Muertos make-up was featured on the Skull-a-Day blog!

Skull-a-Day is a super cool site which is in it's 5th year of featuring some kind of skull everyday.

Dial M for Sayonara (さよならのダイヤルメートル)

Dinner House M

Hidden on a non-descript length of Temple St., tucked behind a little white fence and under an equally plain sign reading only, ‘M’ (in English) are the two faded mint green doors of Dinner House M

Alas, it’s seems the rumors are finally true, the legendary night spot will be closing it’s doors officially after 24 years of keeping them open well past 2AM.

You can read the Los Angeles Times article which does a fairly good job of remaining neutral and providing a bit of history on the place. However, for anyone who’s ever frequented The M (from foreplay to gunplay) they all have a cherished story to tell. (Check out Yelp for further details…)

Our first encounter with the place was for a friends James Bond-themed birthday party. The venue could not have been more perfect, complete with classy drinks, gorgeous ladies singing various Bond theme songs and several guys arriving in full scuba gear only to strip down into surprisingly unwrinkled tuxedos! All of this with the Japanese fusion Jazz Bar as backdrop.

So, it was a no brainer that when Nurse Kitty Murphy was assigned to Operation Kitty Kitty Bang Bang that Dinner House M would be the spot to hold her going away party and also mark her final performance with Surgeon Marta to date. Like the Bond party before it, the evening was a memorable success.

We’ll always love Dinner House M for providing us with a relaxed vibe and intimate surroundings, an incredibly stocked sunken bar, good food and most nights a cool jazz combo playing in the corner where if you were lucky owner Miki would occasionally sing a number or two. We’ll love it for being just off the beaten path, a modern day speak easy where absolutely no questions were asked, especially not about one’s ID. We’ll love it for all the late night thrills and early morning raids by the LAPD Vice Squad. We’ll love it for it’s brazen views on liquor licenses, smoking codes and most especially kougouheika Miki Saito. Be sure to say your good-byes on or before Wednesday June 8th.

These Are The Nerds You're Looking For

We here at SM HQ love getting our geek on all most as much as getting a good chow down.  Anytime we get combine both proclivities is always time satisfyingly spent.  However, we know for some of you there just isn't enough time in the day to stay on top of all this.   Fear not, the good folks over at That's Nerdalicious are there to welcome you back into the fold of all things geeky, yummy and bacon covered.

They were even good enough to share our recent Stormtrooper Invades Sesame Street Cupcake find at a supermarket in Los Angeles.  Check 'em out! Rx, SM

AMERICA’S GOT HANNIBAL “TONITE”

SM Breaking News Logo

SM Breaking News Logo

Usually when we give a shout out it’s something along the lines of “umm oops... Who can help us raise some bail money?”

This time however it’s to share some fun-tastic news with y’all! Our friend and vocal mentor (the man who helped us put the high seas in high C) Hannibal Means appears tonight on AMERICA’S GOT TALENT. The show fell into disrepute after last years “chicken chaser” fiasco so it seems they searched a little harder this time round to find some real talent.

As a former protégée of Nina Simone,Hannibal has the pipes to knock the roof of the Staple Center and that’s just when he’s warming up! Suffice it to say it’s not often that a man with Hannibal's gifts (and dare we say it eccentricities) appears on primetime TV in front of a large mainstream audience.

So our request is simple tune in TONIGHT @ 9pm/(8pm central) on NBC and VOTE VOTE VOTE!

FYI: You can vote up to 10 times via text and email!

Help put the “fuck yeah” back into “what the fuck was that?!?"

We love you all and don’t miss this for the world. Rx, SM
