Dial M for Sayonara (さよならのダイヤルメートル)

Dinner House M

Hidden on a non-descript length of Temple St., tucked behind a little white fence and under an equally plain sign reading only, ‘M’ (in English) are the two faded mint green doors of Dinner House M

Alas, it’s seems the rumors are finally true, the legendary night spot will be closing it’s doors officially after 24 years of keeping them open well past 2AM.

You can read the Los Angeles Times article which does a fairly good job of remaining neutral and providing a bit of history on the place. However, for anyone who’s ever frequented The M (from foreplay to gunplay) they all have a cherished story to tell. (Check out Yelp for further details…)

Our first encounter with the place was for a friends James Bond-themed birthday party. The venue could not have been more perfect, complete with classy drinks, gorgeous ladies singing various Bond theme songs and several guys arriving in full scuba gear only to strip down into surprisingly unwrinkled tuxedos! All of this with the Japanese fusion Jazz Bar as backdrop.

So, it was a no brainer that when Nurse Kitty Murphy was assigned to Operation Kitty Kitty Bang Bang that Dinner House M would be the spot to hold her going away party and also mark her final performance with Surgeon Marta to date. Like the Bond party before it, the evening was a memorable success.

We’ll always love Dinner House M for providing us with a relaxed vibe and intimate surroundings, an incredibly stocked sunken bar, good food and most nights a cool jazz combo playing in the corner where if you were lucky owner Miki would occasionally sing a number or two. We’ll love it for being just off the beaten path, a modern day speak easy where absolutely no questions were asked, especially not about one’s ID. We’ll love it for all the late night thrills and early morning raids by the LAPD Vice Squad. We’ll love it for it’s brazen views on liquor licenses, smoking codes and most especially kougouheika Miki Saito. Be sure to say your good-byes on or before Wednesday June 8th.

God Save The Queens

Hey Everyone,

Our first show of 2011 is just around the corner!

We took time out at the end of last year for seasonal soakings, lunar realignments and the gestation of new Surgeon Marta melodies. So, while the new tunes are running around the nursery, we want you to come out and join us this Tuesday at Eleven Nightclub in West Hollywood.

As many of you know Surgeon Marta likes to deliver the rock n' roll with a certain theatrical flamboyance and it seems word has gotten around... This Tuesday the noise will be back in boy-town and a happy ending is guaranteed for all!

In the Move for love…

Home Sweet Home

Wow, 2010 is really tuning into one of those years where a lot of hard work is finally paying off!   It’s been a real whirlwind week since the launch our brand spanking new website last Tuesday and we would like to officially thank everyone who 'Chicked Out' with us!

You won't believe what we found in the bathtub

Getting the website from just an idea to fully built and launched was no small feat as you might have guessed.  Much of the process involved managing our collective daily lives and adapting to the ever-evolving entity that is Surgeon Marta.

Unbeknownst to us at the time, we didn’t think that anything would come out of that first fateful gig in the Kat Club a few years back but many more shows after that, a slew of the worlds most dedicated fans and one research institute later we now know better.

However, the biggest change of 2010 was also our most recent.  After adding up the money that we were individually spending on rent, telephones, utilities, rehearsals, etc… we decided it was time for a fresh approach to our living arrangements.  Thus entered the search for the ultimate band house!

Don't have to worry about blowing out the windows - there aren't any!

Now, this process took us to places we’ve never been to and not always in a good way. Yet, we finally did find the perfect place for Surgeon Marta, HQ – an abandoned convalescent home for the mentally ill on the eastern outskirts of Los Angeles, CA.

It needs major work but absolutely meets our requirements, namely:

♦ Enough rooms so that no one has to share. ♦ Enough bathrooms so that the Nurses don’t have to share with the Doctors. ♦ A large sound-proof-able rehearsal space. ♦ Neighbors who don’t want to see the cops anymore than we do.

We can see though you...

And a not entirely unexpected bonus: The place is completely haunted!!!  (Good news: Turns out ghosts of deceased mental patients love punk rock.)

Anyway, we gotta shake this hospital building out of its deep sleep and slap a new face on it!  We’ll keep you posted with our progress and of course the ultimate house warming party…

Can anyone say, POOL PARTY?!
